Economy after catastrophes...

Edit2: Thank you all! I've my answers!

Hi all,

This is a question I don't know how to google so I'd like to ask your experiences.

We've a big city and there was a big catastrophe which destroyed cca. half of it. Like Katrina and New Orleans. The question is, how would this effect the money-system/economy? (I looked at the Wikipedia article about the effects of Katrina but the big overall-damage costs don't really help.)

I mean, if before the Big Bum a meal was X money, then after the Big Bum how much would it be? Would there be a noticeable difference? Or would it be still around X?

And not just the meal but the overall prices. Would they change in a completely illogical system or would there be an order to them, like "things that are necessary for life [e.g.: food, water/heating] remain but things that are not [e.g.: TV, radio, books, flower, theater-tickets...] become more expensive?" Or in the other way around...?

Edit: The world is Final Fantasy VII, the catastrophe is Meteor, and the city is Midgar.
