History of Adoption in the U.K.

I'd like to know what the legal procedure for adoption in the U.K. was for any time between 1600 and 1900. Specifically, for adopting a newborn whose mother had died. Would there have been a legal system for determining who got the child, and what legal documents would be necessary?

Thanks ever so much!
