food in eastern Canada (culture gaps)

I need some local dishes or snacks that would be recognized in eastern Canada (Toronto through Nova Scotia; the story is set on Prince Edward Island) but that isn't standard American fare. Comfort food, late spring / early summer. I mainly need it for atmosphere and cultural differences. Anecdotes would be great too.

Thanks!

edit - The character's from Toronto, I'm not implying it's actually geographically connected. ;)
