Hi. De-lurking, blah blah.

I'm writing a fic in which one of my characters is a single dad with a four-year-old son.

The mom isn't in the picture because she walked out on them three years ago.

The dad and son are pretty insular. They have some friendly neighbors who babysit while the dad works, and sometimes they go see the grandparents. They go out to parks and playgrounds when they can, too, so the son can play with other kids; but for the most part it's just the two of them.

They're lower-middle class.

The kid is pretty well-behaved, but he does have an occasional tantrum. And he has a stubborn streak that he gets from his father. He's also pretty outgoing and friendly, open to meeting new people.

My fic opens with them running into one of the dad's old friends, who he hasn't seen in roughly six years. This friend (male) was in love with him when they were younger and will ask him out later in the story. By the end of the story, they will probably move in together.

So my current questions are roughly as follows:

1. What is an average day/week like for a single parent with a pretty well-behaved four-year-old?

2. How might that child react to his father dating for the first time, especially considering he'll be dating another man?

I'm sure I'll think of more questions, but that's it for the moment. I have limited experience with young children and, frankly, don't plan to have kids of my own. Ever. But my muse and my best friend insist that I must write this particular story. Any information will be appreciated.
