Picking up accents?

(Annoyingly, I could probably answer this myself one day, but I'm unwilling to wait until I've been to Germany for a year to finish this fic.)

Here's the set-up: one of my characters goes to live in a foreign country, whose language he is fairly fluent in. I'm pretty much positive (from personal experience of foreign lecturers) that as he spends more and more time there, his native accent will fade, but what I want to know is this: will this carry on so that he eventually 'picks up' the local accent of where he is? (The place he goes to live has a fairly strong and distinctive accent, which I always visualise as a Yorkshire one.)

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Once again, you guys are fantastic. Thanks for all the help. :-D
