Sleep/Dream Deprivation, CoffeeCoffeeCoffee.

Right. This isn't so much a question about sleep-deprivation as it is about deprivation of the effects of sleep.

I remember hearing in my 12th-grade Physch class about the effects of deprivation of REM: this somehow caused people to be less alert, sleep less soundly, stuff to that effect. There was a study done where people were woken up before they reached REM, were continually kept from it for an entire week, and then spent something like a third more time in that stage as a result. My questions are:

1) What study is/was this? I have no idea what it was called, or what to google.

2) Is there some sort of sleep-deprivation chart? (X hours: irritation, Y hours: microsleep, etc.)

3) Effects of coffee/stimulants combined with a sleep-deprived state? (IE: how well does it work? At what point do you just say, "screw it all" and find a couch or a bed or something?) Personal stories welcome.

Thanks in advance!
