Deaths within the UK

Hi. I was just wondering if anybody knew much about the procedures following a suspicious death in the UK or could point me in the direction of some links.

Specifically I'm looking to know if the victim would be identified before or after a post mortem was carried out. Would this still be carried out by a family member? And what kind of time scale are post mortems carried out in - is it within hours or a couple of days? And when would an inquest into death be opened?

I guess that a lot of this is dependent on each individual case - I'm thinking in terms of the death of a young woman in her late 20's where the body was found within hours of death and the police aren't sure if death was accidental, suicide or murder.

Any information gratefully received.

Thank you. :)
