[ANON POST] Okinawa history

The story is set in 21st century America. The question is to establish some background information on one of the protagonists of my story. The character (born and raised in America) is of Okinawan/Japanese decent and is interested in their cultural history.

I am looking for information about the history of Okinawa Island, specifically I am looking for information about life and culture of the island in the 18th century and 19th century. Everything I have been able to find stops around 1610 and then resumes in the mid 1800’s.

Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.
