Question about condoms that really needs a personal answer

Okay, this one is kind of awkward, because I haven't the slightest idea how you'd research it except personal experience, and being that I don't have a male partner . . . yeah, not really possible.

I have two characters, one HIV-positive (the bottom), one HIV-negative (the top). The pos character is trying to deliberately infect the negative character, who doesn't know the other is pos. Because of the surrounding circumstances, the negative character is pretty cautious (he grew up in the 1980s/early 90s), so the most likely way for this to work is for the pos character to sabotage the condom, probably after it's already on. I know that in theory all he has to do is poke a hole, but because it's plot-relevant that the negative character know for certain that his health has been compromised, I want an out-and-out tear that he can actually see.

My idea was to have the pos character bite the tip of the condom while sliding it on with his mouth (or during oral sex, depends on how the scene works itself out), either biting it off completely or letting it tear just a little. Now the question: how long would it take for the condom to actually tear significantly (i.e. to the point of being easy to feel/see in a semi-lighted club environment) during anal sex, and if the tip is bitten off, would the top be able to feel it if there's no significant time break between putting on the condom and beginning intercourse?

Anybody have any horror stories they're willing to share? Nonny-mouse is fine by me.
