Death by Pressure/Gravity

Setting: A thousand or so years in the future, aboard a spaceship.

Would it be possible to kill someone by a sudden increase in gravity/pressure? By googling 'sudden increase in gravity', I found a WikiAnswers thing that said if Earth's gravity doubled, a lot of animals would die from the sudden weight increase, but since that's all I have to go on, I'd quite like a second opinion.

Also, if it is possible, are there any external signs a medically trained observer (admittedly one who's in rather a hurry) would spot and go 'Ahah! Death by gravity!'? I sort of have this vague idea that there'd be a lot of trauma to the internal organs, but I'm no medic so I have no idea a) whether this is right or b) how this would manifest itself.

I've googled 'death by pressure/gravity', 'sudden increase in pressure/gravity' and 'death by sudden increase in pressure/gravity', but no luck. Also trawled back through the tags I've used on here.
