attempted murder due to mental illness

I'm writing a novel (set in Western Australia) featuring a character whose mother suffered from post-natal depression when he was a child and was caught trying to drown him.  The novel is set present day, and this happened in my character's childhood, so it would have been roughly 25 years ago.  My question is: if it is ruled that the attempt was as a result of mental illness, what happens to her? Is she found not guilty? Is she taken to a psychiatric  facility? If so, how long and under what circumstances would she be kept? Who would be allowed to visit?

I've tried googling 'sentencing+attempted murder+mental illness', but haven't had much luck.
