Librarians, libraries: how they function.

Hello guys. I'm working on a novella-type project. It's a light-hearted mystery novel that takes place during our times in and around Chicago. It involves a police detective who ends up investigating a crime (but he's really trying to figure out why his girlfriend has been acting so sketchy).

BUT ANYWAYS. My questions.

How many librarians does an average public library have? Is there a hierarchy of some sort?

I ask because I think I'm doin' it wrong. In my story, there's a character that I call the head librarian. Would that be more like the director of the library or the administrator?

There's another character that works at the same library and she's a librarian. But she's not the "head librarian." Are there different types of librarians? Like, media, audio/video, fiction, whatever. Or is just one for the whole library?

And a question for those that work at libraries. When you guys close for the evening, do you clean up or is there a cleaning crew that comes in? Do you organize/re-shelve some books? What's the typical library protocol for after-closing duties?

I googled but didn't get much of anything and I also asked on another writing community with no response (writerighton, on both Friday Help posts).

Thank you!
