I need to know what kind of medical-related positions a woman might have been able to hold in France in the 19th century for a piece I am working on. So far the only thing I have been able to come up with is midwife. I know during that time midwives sometimes performed abortions (in England, at least. Were abortions as commonly available in France as in England back then?), but would widwives have had other duties as well? Or were there other positions of a vaguely medical nature available to women back then? (Perhaps an herbalist of some kind?) It doesn't need to be a great medical position, I just need an excuse for this woman to have witnessed a case where it was believed someone had a medical problem but it turned out to be supernatural.
