Mental Imprisonment - quotes and references

I’m not even sure how to look this up. I’m not even sure how to talk about it but here goes …

I need references in books, movies and TV about being imprisoned (or committed to a mental institution) and realizing the extent of being imprisoned extends to the mind/psyche etc. In other words, not just the physical attempts to escape but the mental/psychological.

Maybe the background will help: I have a character who, via pseudo-science, been ‘imprisoned’ in an imaginary world in his mind – a world that seems like his ideal life. So, in that context he doesn’t know he’s imprisoned/captured, he thinks he’s going through his normal daily life. However, his sub-conscious is aware and is trying to send him signals through ads, the shows on TV, radio broadcasts, books he’s reading etc. His sub-conscious is trying to tell him that something is wrong; his world isn’t ‘real’ and so on.

For example, his apartment number is #6, the same as the Prisoner on ‘The Prisoner’, there’s going to be ‘The Prisoner’ marathons going on and so on. I need other referents; they would be ideal if they are other semi-cheesy TV/movies, they could be classic works of poetry, philosophy and etc. Quotes, excerpts etc. Anything. Extra bonus if they are British/Welsh/non-American.

ETA: Thanks everyone! I've got a ton of great refeneces. Blake's 7 is espeically good and the mix of classics and modern will do nicely.
