dying from a knife wound

Hello. I'm trying to write a scene where a fatal stab wound occurs. I've looked through the tabs and they've been helpful, but none of them have quite what I need, so I was wondering if anybody could help corroborate my ideas ... or tell me if I'm going wrong somewhere. :-)

The background is that person A knocks person B to the ground and a struggle ensues. Person A is stabbed with a short blade, he remains conscious for a short time (long enough to say a few words to someone) but then dies a few minutes after the stabbing.

As far as I can tell, this would most likely occur if the blade ruptured a major blood vessel and he died from blood loss, because If an organ was damaged then death would take much longer. Is that right?

They're rolling about on the floor, so in that position B would most likely strike from the side or around A's back, probably under the ribs. Would this be conducive to hitting a major blood vessel? Or would he be better aiming from a different angle?

How much blood would be lost? Would it leak out of him in a big puddle or would it mostly be internal bleeding? What other symptoms would occur, e.g. that Hollywood thing where everyone has a trickle of blood from the side of their mouth - does that even happen in RL?

Do you think it would be possible if for the first few seconds A didn't realise that he had been stabbed? I've read accounts of people who have been injured but who have not realised it due to the adrenalin racing through their body. Would this be possible with a stab wound?

I've searched for info on stab wounds, knife wounds, blood loss from major blood vessels, dying from knife wounds, bleeding from knife wounds.

Thank you in advance for your help.

EDIT: Thanks, everyone, for your help with this. Your comments have been really useful.
