US college student studying abroad during the 1980s?

I have a college student (African-American female, if it matters) and US citizen who's going to do a college junior year abroad for the 1985-1986 school year. I would really like for her to go to Vietnam for other story-related reasons, but I'm having a hard time finding out if there were study abroad programs for Vietnam back then, especially since the Cold War was still going on. If not Vietnam, where could she go that would be a little more unusual (rather than, say, England or France)? I'm not bound to a particular college for her to attend; I'd prefer one on the East Coast (ideally between North Carolina and New York), but if anyone knows of a specific program at a college/university somewhere else in the continental US that's fine too.

I've googled variations on "Vietnam study abroad history," "study abroad history," and "Vietnam study abroad 1980s," as well as looking at the CIEE's website.
