I have a character who recieved some sort of injury to one of his hips when he was 17 years old during a fight (which I'd like to keep knifeless, and the setting means that guns would be out of place). At the time he was tall, fairly fit and healthy, yet it did mean he was unable to walk without having some sort of support (like a crutch or something). I plan to have this injury heal so that on normal days after he recovers it does not affect him, yet if he were to overexert himself by getting into another fight, it would start to bother him again for a while, and he would have difficulty walking. It would also come back to haunt him more in his old age. If it helps, the setting of this is a medieval era in another world, he recieves no medical attention until the following morning, and the person he fought with at the time was a strong-built male around 40 years old.
My questions are: 1. What sort of an injury would my character be likely to recieve? (I've been thinking perhaps tendon/joint damage, but I'm unsure). 2. How long would it take for him to recover both the first time around, and the times when the injury bothers him later on?
I've searched things like 'old injuries' 'tendon damage' 'injuries affecting walking' 'old hip injuries' amongst other variations (admittedly quite cautiously as I am not good with unpleasant pictures).
