Caged Birds?

I've heard the term "caged birds" in reference to the courtesans of old Japan, but I don't remember what the exact meaning of the term means in this instance. Could any of you help with this? I googled and browsed the immortalgeisha forum but didn't really find the answer I was looking for.

Household objects and brand names in early 1960s USA

I'm looking for household objects and brand names that conjure up a home in early 1960s America, inhabited by, say, a childless, middle-class married couple in their late twenties. What's the brand of floor covering? What domestic appliances are in use and who makes them? What do they put in their sandwiches? What rooms does their home have?

The finished story will be pretty short, ~500 words, so I don't have a lot of room to give a sense of place. It's retro sci-fi: domestic America, with domestic robots. Think of all the name-checking in the song 'Somewhere That's Green' from Little Shop of Horrors - that's the sort of thing I'm after.

I thought this would be easy to Google up, but I'm having trouble. I've tried '1960s americana', 'household usa 1960s', 'domestic appliances 1960s' and similar terms.

Edit: Wow, you guys. I haven't replied to everyone individually but I was knocked out to come online this morning and see 22 comments, all of which were really helpful. Thank you all so much!
