Women's rights in the middle east during the 1980s

Alright, so I've gotten myself into a pickle. This sure seemed like an easy enough question to answer when I started looking several hours ago.

Essentially, I need a middle-eastern country that was relatively lax on women's rights during the late 1980s. They need to be part of the U.N. too. It really can be any middle east country. The only problem is, I can't find almost anything on any country's rights during the 80s. I've picked through wikipedia articles, googled every combination I can think of that has the words "Middle east" and "Women" in it. The very most I've been able to find is that women were in slightly more demand during the Iraq-Iran war. But since recent history has been a lot more popular (And every time a country has gotten women's voting rights the last few years it fill up pages and pages of news stories), I really can't find what I'm looking for.

So, here's the situation. The U.N.'s finally revealed the fact Supers exist, along with a policing force for them, in 1988. I don't have anyone from the middle east, and I needed a women. Were there any middle eastern countries (That were part of the U.N.) in 1988 that would have lax enough rules to allow a women that sort of role? I swear I faintly remember learning about some country like that ages ago, but I'd like to know if it's just a pipe dream.

As an added note, I'm not sure how lax Turkey was or if it even counts as Middle Eastern (I should know that shouldn't I?), but I've already got a dignitary from there who dies rather, uh, quickly. So regardless of it's state, I can't have another from there.

Holy crap, I got back from a movie and had like a 20 replies! I wasn't expecting that at all, judging by how hard it was to find information myself. Thanks a lot guys!

Hi ho!

Russian term of endearment for a little girl

I'm in the process of writing a Star Trek fic and have run into some difficulty finding an appropriate Russian term of endearment for Chekov to use for a six year old girl who would be roughly equivalent to a little sister in terms of their relationship.

My google search and search of the tags turned up mostly terms related to adults or to boys. The only options I've been able to find are "malyshka" and "lastochka". Would those be appropriate terms for a small girl?

I'd also be interested in any way to give her a Russian nickname, as her given name is Joanna.

effects of losing the tongue, particularly in regards to eating

Googled: effects of losing tongue, eating without tongue, tongue removed, tongue cut out, life without tongue. Mostly I turned up articles about tongue reconstruction.
Setting: fantasy world at roughly the same technological level as 14th/15th century Europe
Character: male, mid-40s
Question: I have a character whose tongue is cut out (canon). How much of the tongue is lost is unspecified, but it's enough that he can't talk, but can still eat. I assume he's still eating solid food, given that this is set in a time without blenders and there's no references made to him only eating liquids. I'd like to know how exactly you'd go about eating without a tongue. I'd imagine that it would get pretty tedious when you can't taste your food, but I'm also interested in the mechanics of it.

Of course, any other info that anyone has about life sans tongue would be welcome as well. Thanks!
