A long, long while back I stumbled accross a mention that the Japanese used to have haiku parties where they'd look at a pornographic image and then compose seemingly innocent haiku about 'em.
Anyone know if it's true, and if so, where I could find some examples? I've searched all over for comfirmation of this, and while I have aquired some interesting new bits of trivia (and some intriguing new web links) I havn't found any mention of what I've described.
For a story about a canon character's childhood, I need to figure out how his older sister might support the two of them in Tokyo in the early 20th century. In the absence of any clear canon information to the contrary, I'm making her about nine years older than he is--fourteen years old to his five, in 1905--because as far as I know, they're alone in the world, so she would need to be able to take care of him and earn a living. (She is the only relative of his mentioned in canon.)
Is it possible/likely to have her working in a factory making naval uniforms and, on the side, taking in piecework to sew at home? Would that kind of work be available to a young woman in Tokyo at the time? (I'm assuming that she looks older than fourteen and can lie convincingly about her age if need be.)
Also--and this is a very minor detail, but would she wear the western factory girl's "uniform" of dark skirt and shirtwaist blouse? In canon, her brother has a flashback to his childhood, and he's shown wearing a shirt and short pants.
My Google-fu is failing me--I've tried various combinations of Japan, garment industry, women's fashion, clothing, shirtwaist, western dress without much luck.
I'm writing a screenplay, currently, so this is a detail I'd usually just summarize in prose but can't in this format, so.
Setting: A motel somewhere on the line between TX and NYC, probably on the more Southernly bit of the drive. The year is probably 1989, but anything played this late is probably not new at all.
Detail: Two of my characters are hunkering down for the night in their hotel room and, unable to sleep, they turn on the TV. What I don't know is what would be on the TV. It's a cheapo motel and about one at night (this is flexible, though) so it probably wouldn't be anything particularly new or popular at the time or even anything they'd normally watch, but what sorts of things would be on the television?
I'd love it if I could use some very old, classic movie, black and white with sort of a melodramatic love thing and pretty leads or maybe just an old suspense film or something likewise classic but slightly more gritty, like a western or something. It would be great if there was a lot of tension, romantic or otherwise, and a lot of traveling, especially by car. This would just be an added bonus, though, because while I'd love to tie it in with my screenplay I don't have to or anything. They mostly just need something to watch. ETA: It doesn't matter if it's homoerotic or heterotic tension, both or either is great.
I have absolutely no idea how to google this, and I sort of doubt it's googleable at all. I don't have a television, either, never have, so I don't even know what kinds of movies they play in the middle of the night now to extrapolate from.
