Air Force Deaths.

I've got a question involving the death of an Air Force Colonel killed in action during a mission (and no, this has nothing to do with Stargate). I've only ever seen this type of situation in the movies: a uniformed, somber AF officer comes up to the widow's house bearing a letter--is this accurate, or just a romanticized view? Is the news sent in a letter? Does the AF officer (if one does indeed visit the house) deliver any sort of item (a flag, a letter, a flower, a hug, etc)?

Thanks. :D
