Civil War-era gunshot wound infection rates

During the American Civil War, soldiers suffered grievous wounds from Minie balls, and many of them had to have limbs amputated to prevent the spread of infection, particularly gangrene (I think). If left untreated, about how long would it take for a debilitating infection to set in for such a wound?

Skin's functions and such

I have a character that has his skin replaced magically with metal in an accident. (not Doom. :P)

Now, what repercussions will this have, medically?

I have:
-Vitamin D deficency
-Temperature problems
-Water problems?

He has full sensation through the stuff, and it's flexible due to the magic, but what other things can he look foward to in the future?

pre WWI photography in France

I need to find out what kind of equipment would have been available to French photographers prior to WWI. I'm also interested in how easily a non-professional would have been able to have access to such equipment. Any suggestions on where I could go to research this?

(great community by the way! I've been quietly observing for a while)
