Okay. This is a personal subject and an even more personal answer that I need. Please let's not get into a discussion on opinions over the issue, because that's just messy. I don't care what you think about it, and I'm not going to tell you what I think. I think we're all mature enough to not start things, right? Right. Okay. On to the question. Feel free to answer anonymously if you want, because you know, it is personal.
I'm sort of doing some pre-research source gathering.
My main story universe that I write in is sort of an urban fantasy. One of the major secondary characters is a vain idiot who bought birdlike wings from some fly-by-night place dealing in magical body modifications. I started thinking about all the things that could go wrong with that, and now I have the kernel of a story about him needing patched up and inflicting himself on some poor avian vet digging at me.
Main problem here is that I know nothing about veterinary medicine of any sort, and the stupid story wants me to write it with the doctor as my POV character. In about a week I might be able to get hold of a ornithologist and/or a pre-vet professor to pester, but right now I'm just trying to figure out what questions I want to ask them. The library in town didn't turn up anything for any combination of avian/bird/medicine/veterinary. Google is mostly giving me things about why one should take one's pet bird to a bird vet, articles about individual disease, or colleges' avian medicine programs. Can anyone recommend me any good books or sites on the field of avian medicine in general, reasonably readable medical texts, anything like that?
