I have a bit of an odd question... does anyone know around when the old rhyme " xxx and xxx, sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g..." originated? My story is set in 1925 New Orleans and I want to know if I can get away with having one of my characters singing it to tease her friend.
Googled "sitting in a tree"+rhyme, "sitting in a tree"+rhyme origins, "sitting in a tree" children's rhyme, etc. Found a lots of places with variations on that rhyme, some not so... innocent, shall we say, and a few places with a whole bunch of differing jump-rope rhymes and the like, but no date references except the word "old." Any help would be greatly appreciated!
