Police cars?

This is for a play I'm writing that's set in mid-1950's America. My question is: what year/decade did American police cars start using the red & blue flashing lights and/or the sirens?

I've tried Googling several things to come up with the answer, and checked the Wikipedia page on police cars, but couldn't find anything. Any help anyone could give would be fantastic ^_^
