So, I'm at a bit of a standstill in my current project, and it's one for which I haven't been able to find any help for anywhere on the net.
My MMC (Adam), has recently gone through a very messy divorce (within the last six months or so). The Ex (Lynn) was seeing someone before the split, and she's still with him. Up until about 13k words ago, she didn't even care about getting custody of their children (twin three year old boys). Adam has primary custody right now, but Lynn decided to fight it out of the blue.
Now, here's where it's getting sticky. Lynn usually has the boys on the weekends (she lives in San Jose). Which means Adam pretty much doesn't see them between when he drops them off at his baby sitter up in San Francisco and when (depending on the week), either Lynn drops them back of at Adam's house, or he drives down to pick them up. After one particularly bachelor-riffic weekend of not shaving and wearing the same shirt for several days, Lynn doesn't show up with the boys. Around mid-afternoon, he starts calling her cell phone like a lunatic, but she doesn't answer (nothing new; she makes it a point to avoid his calls most of the time). After an hour of calling her every so often, and even calling her home line, he gets sick of waiting, and drives down to San Jose, figuring that she's just being difficult. He gets down there, and finds no one home. In a burst of anger, he swings his fist at a cabinet door, and bruises his knuckles a little bit. It's about this time that he thinks to call the baby sitter Lynn uses in San Jose. During the conversation, he learns that Lynn dismissed the babysitter permanently, and the sitter says that it had something to do with moving out of town, but she doesn't have a whole lot of information.
It's at about this time that Adam realizes that Lynn has been planning this for a while, and he figures out that she and the boyfriend have effectively kidnapped the boys, and could be in Mexico by that point.
And this is what I can't figure out.
1. Whose jurisdiction would this fall under? The two cities are about an hour away. One would assume it would be the SFPD, since Adam and the boys live in Frisco, but I'm not totally sure.
2. What would the process be for filing the actual report? Would it be more effective to call the cops or go into the station. And once that's figured out, what steps would be taken between saying "I think my ex wife has left the state with my kids" and parting company with the cop (detective, I'm assuming)? Would this be better taken care of in the station, or (if the SFPD), better done inside Adam's house?
I don't really want this to seem like a Law and Order segment. I tried that, and it sucked. As long as the process at least seems believable, I'll be happy. But what I came up with earlier this evening was absolutely rubbish.
Thanks in advance!
