Being woken with smelling salts

This is for a fantasy story, set in a rough equivalent of 1700s Croatia.

I've researched smelling salts and have a good understanding of how they work, what I'm having a harder time finding is a first hand description of someone who has been woken by them. The best I've come up with so far is an ammonia capsule, which is not quite the same.

So, if you've ever been roused from a faint by smelling salts, what did it feel like?
