War horses and dismounted riders

I've been researching war horse training, but so far haven't found anything about what a war horse was supposed to do if its rider was dismounted by force during battle. Was it trained to stay put or maybe to retreat? Or was there no special behavior for that situation?

The time period doesn't really matter, close quarter cavalry warfare has a very long history, although I most need to know about the Early Modern Period up to the about the 19th century. (I assume something basic like this would be about the same for any culture who used horses in warfare, so I don't think location is important.) This question is pretty general concerning time period and location.

Thanks!
