Enucleation!

Alright, I'm writing a fantasy (so there's always a magical fallback but...) in which one of my main characters ends up with his eyes ritually removed. All I can seem to find on the subject is modern day eye-removal surgery info. I'm basically looking for information on how it might be done and what sort of aftercare would be used. In terms of technology I'm thinking roughly 10th Europe.

Surely there were some cultures where they'd remove a person's eyes as some sort of punishment or something?
