Order of Succession

Hi guys, just a quick question if this is acceptable for a medieval-type monarchy:

The king and queen dies. Their only son was only around 10 years old when this happened. I'm thinking the uncle can be king for the meantime (no wife, no own son/ daughter) and will rule for the meantime before the young prince comes of age. Is this acceptable? Or the prince can actually take over the throne, and just needs a guardian?

Thanks! Wikipedia isn't helping me much ^^;

EDIT: Thank you everyone! Looks like I wasn't looking at the right direction ^^;
