The person has had his horse fall in battle ("medieval" fantasy) and his foot gets caught and twisted the wrong way underneath and he gets a serious compound fracture--bone through the skin and all. What does a compound fracture feel like? Is it a pain that shoots up the limb or is it fairly localized? Sharp or dull? Can you feel the bones moving around? After the limb has been set, what kind of pain do you have (sharp, achey, shooting, etc.)? Does it hurt to move your digits (fingers or toes)? Any other feelings? When it's healed enough to put weight on it, does it still hurt for a while afterwards or does the pain subside before then?
The character will also contract an infection (osteomyelitis). Has anyone had any experience (or know someone who has) with this, and knows what it feels like?
And I know it's an extreme longshot, but does anyone know what maggot therapy (for the osteomyelitis) feels like?
