Learning radicals and characters

My google-fu was a big, fat, FAIL with this one.

I vaguely remember how I learned the different radicals in Chinese characters (I say "vaguely" because most of them I kinda just randomly picked them up over the years), but how are radicals specifically taught in Chinese-speaking countries to children? Are children taught all of the radicals at once when they are first beginning to learn hanzi or are they introduced slowly as they come up? I know the characters are learned by rote, brute memorization, but how radicals are learned escapes me.

I'm specifically interested in traditional characters for my story, but knowing how it works with the simplifed (where the radical is sometimes vastly different from the originally character) would also be interesting to know.
