Metro cards--can they be traced?

My protagonist has been given a paper Metro card with a specific amount of money on it to lead him to a specific Metro station in Washington, D.C. My question is, can he trace that card and where it's been through some kind of computer system, or is he just going to have do a little deductive work and a lot of footwork?
I've been looking on Google, and it seems he would be able to track a SmartCard, but this is a paper one. If it helps, he has a group of extremely computer-savvy friends who would hack into the Metro computers for him.
