A chronic disease?

I was thinking... One of my main characters ( she's around eighteen years old ) has is disease. It needs to be a chronic disease ( I think, it may be any disease, though ), one hard to treat.

The disease needs to be rather dangerous AND still allow the person to exercise kind of normally. Or maybe one that would fake it's cure, or ''sleep'' for awhile, then come back. Oh... A minor character ( who was around eleven years old ) died of the same disease...

I searched on google, and checked a few threads asking about this subject, but at least by now, no disease seemed suitable.

Sorry if I sounded mean, annoying or stupid. If you find this thread to be a bother, I will delete it.
