Latin grammar errors? Warning: damn weird question ahead!

OK, I admit it. I'm one of those lazy fantasy writers who doesn't like to make up any more languages than they have to, and will happily proxy things. In this case, I am using Latin rather than making up a Latin-esque language for a civilisation based on the Romans.

I've hit a very, very strange problem, and googling and looking at Latin grammar primers haven't helped me. In fact, I think I need someone pretty good at Latin for this.

What kind of grammatical mistakes could a native speaker of Latin make, when speaking English?

If anyone can help me with this, you have my undying thanks.

EDIT: Whoa. Wasn't expecting that much help. Thanks a bunch- I should be able to appropriately mangle the character's lines now!

EDIT 2: I'm going to throw in one last quick question here- how would the character say the phrase "of the"? (The exact phrase, if it helps, is "the men of the [whatever]th Cohort".) And thanks again for all your help. :-)
