Languages in ex-colonies

This is one of those things that I feel I should know, and yet I can think of so many examples that go both ways that I am now completely confused.

How common is it for a colony to continue using its former rulers' language after they leave? (Either by itself or in conjunction with the native language.)

The country in question was a colony for about 500 years, but has been independent for the last 75 or so.

EDIT: Wow, I honestly wasn't expecting so many replies! Thanks a lot, people- you've made one of my plot points a hell of a lot easier!
