Where do they hold dead people's things?

Character A dies in Chicago. Edit: He has no family and died in an accident.

Among his possessions the authorities find a letter from his baby-mama.

The authorities send a notice to the baby-mama's address informing any next of kin that they have 30 days to claim his possessions from the office of X.

Does this sound plausible, and what is the office of X called?
