Sudden Relocation

What kind of employment might cause one to suddenly and unexpectedly uproot themselves and their family, having to drop everything else and move from New York to Paris? Would it do this frequently, so that the family rarely had more than the bare essentials at any given time? Also, I'd prefer it to be something your average goth-like seventeen-year-old wouldn't know too much about, or at least not particularly care. Thanks much all.
