Strategies for putting out a fire on a ship?

Hello everyone! Thanks very much in advance for any help you might have. Good terms I've used include "sails caught fire", "fire on ships", "how to put out a fire on a ship"... Pretty literal terms. I think I've had no luck with searching because what I'm looking for is somewhat specific. This was helpful, but if I'm going to write a "putting out fire" scene, I'd like a little more detail.

Setting-wise, it's a fantasy world with a wood tallship. I want lightning to strike the mast and a sail to catch fire. Please call me out on this if the logistics of that doesn't make sense! My question is - if this is taking place in a storm, how would one go about putting OUT a fire on a sail? I've come across references to pails and sponges, cutting parts of the sail, using the elements to help. I guess what I'm looking for is just a bit more detail on how to write an action scene.

Thanks in advance, guys!
